The Royal Family
Many of the royal family has not fared well. The fall of the old
Pattern took its toll on their health. Most appear to be in their 40s,
with Benedict seeming to be in his 50s. Though all surviving members
visit Argent, they make a point of not staying for long. It is believed
that the closer a relationship a person had to the Pattern in Amber,
the more it affected them when it was destroyed. Some have been able to
buoy up their power by initiating into another power source.
Benedict
Aged and thin, Benedict has chosen to largely live his life in solitude
in the land known as Avalon. He maintains close ties to both Argent as
well as House Hendrake in Chaos. It is known that he has walked the
Logrus.
Bleys
Bleys has managed to secure himself a shadow housing a Broken Pattern.
He has dubbed the location New Yrle. The place is a land of eternal
night, lit only by a rising and falling moon. He apparently seized it
from a necromantic sorcerer. Bleys carries a Pattern sword named
“Aramwir,” and has several magical rings that he wears.
Brand
The instigator of the Patternfall War was assumed to be dead. He has
recently reappeared. Brand has long been known to possess a Pattern
sword named “Werewindle.” He was also the last person seen with the
infamous Jewel of Judgement.
Caine
Caine has set up a base of operations in the Dancing Mountains, in the
Valley of Ygg. It is rumored that he and Julian are “up to something,”
but no one is sure what that is.
Corwin
King of Argent, creator of the Pattern, all around swell guy. At major
state functions he wears a large diamond pendant known as the Jewel of
Quintessence. He also has a Pattern sword named “Greyswandir.”
Delwin
No one has heard from Delwin since before Patternfall.
Deirdre
Last seen being dragged into the Abyss by Brand. Her fate is unknown.
Dworkin
The creator of Amber’s pattern, and apparent progenitor of the royal
line of Amber, is believed dead after the fall of Amber.
Fiona
Fiona has claimed another of the Broken Patterns, this one located in a
ruined city populated solely by madmen. At night, it is said that
dreams stalk the city. The city is known as Somnus. She visits Argent
regularly, and will aid in the teaching of arcane arts.
Florimel
Flora has recently returned from her stay in Manhattan. She seems to be
staying in Argent at the moment, and has been tasked with teaching
Corwin’s kids the basics of etiquette. The longer someone stays in
Argent, the more they will be press-ganged into her lessons.
Gérard
Left behind in Amber during the war, rumors have spread that he has
been delivered by Brand to Julian and Caine in the Valley of Ygg. With
Gérard came a thousand refugees from Amber and Rebma.
Julian
Has set up a base of operations with Caine in the Valley of Ygg. See
Caine.
Llewella
The princess of Rebma has been able to find some solace in the Courts
of Chaos. House Triton, the distant kin to the royal family of Rebma,
dwell there. She has embraced their ways and walked the Logrus.
Martin
Left behind in Amber during the war, he was recently returned to Random
in a San Francisco pizza parlor by Brand.
Merlin
Prince of Argent, chief administrator of the Realm. Trump artist,
initiate into both the Logrus and the Pattern, sorcerer.
Oberon
The one-time king of Amber is believed dead after the fall of Amber.
Random
The youngest of Corwin’s siblings has been fortunate to find Texorami
still intact. Random had taken up residence there again, slowly killing
himself with alcohol. With the return of Martin, he has stayed more in
Argent, keeping his son within the wards of the palace. Random has been
given the unusual title of “Weaponsmaster of Argent” and is tasked with
teaching the new members of the family how to use a wider variety of
weapons.
The Courts of Chaos
Houses and People of Note
King Swayvill I
The ruler of all Chaos. He apparently rose to power during the
tumultuous times following the creation of the Pattern. The major
houses of Chaos are all headed by his progeny.
Suhuy, Keeper of the Logrus
The foremost expert on the Logrus in Chaos, he is also apparently a son
of Swayvill’s. He opted not to form a house of his own, instead
dwelling with his elder brother Gramble in House Sawall.
Lord Bances of Amblerash, High Priest
of the Serpent
A distant relative of Swayvill’s, Bances is the highest figure in
Chaos’s rather straight-laced state religion. Amblerash is one of the
Old Houses.
Prince Gramble, Duke of Sawall
House Sawall is not exactly the most important of houses in the Courts,
but holds special significance for Argent. Prince Merlin’s mother,
Dara, married into this house shortly after Merlin’s birth. Merlin was
then raised in this house, along with his step-brother Mandor and
half-brothers Despil and Jurt. Several years after Merlin left Chaos
for Argent, Prince Gramble formally adopted Merlin, thus putting the
prince in the line of succession for the Chaos throne as well.
Lady Belissa Minobee, Duchess of House
Hendrake
House Hendrake is best known as the “militant house,” with it’s elite
band of hellmaids notorious throughout Chaos. (There’s even a song:
“Never wed a Hendrake lass.”) Though Benedict is not a formal citizen
of Chaos, he frequently visits with the family of his ex-lover and his
daughter.
Lord Dagon of House Triton
House Triton is one of many Old Houses that fell upon hard times after
the creation of the Pattern and the rise of Swayvill. Like many of the
Old Houses, House Triton worships its own gods, paying the Church of
the Serpent only lip service. The Tritons are said to be the
progenitors of the Royal Family of Rebma, and Llewella has turned to
them with Rebma presumably destroyed.
